COMMUNITY TEA SESSIONS in Cornwall

I love the simplicity of the tea. I love how everything else pauses when you hold a cup of tea in your hands. I love how tea brings people together. Over the years I’ve belonged to many communities — photographers, Buddhists, body-movers — but nothing has brought me more joy than making tea friends.

what to expect?

Our daily lives can be often pretty complicated which is why the idea behind these sessions is pretty simple:

We gather together to make tea friends share and steep different kinds of teas.

Bring with you tea and favourite teaware.

The first session doesn’t have a theme so you can bring any loose leaf tea

the location…

This month we are meeting at a beautiful workshop in Scorrier that belongs to my friend Lou, known to local people as the founder of From Trees, who’s on a mission to restore our relationship with trees through the ritual of drinking tea.

The address is Workshop 4, Scorrier Estate, Cornwall, TR16 5AU and you can find directions here

We are starting at 10am but please arrive 10 minutes before.

my tea story

One of my earliest memories is sitting in my grandmother’s tiny kitchen, playing wojna (a Polish card game) and drinking tea from little cups. I looked forward to these afternoons, led by candlelight, every week. I loved the smell of Yunnan tea, the steam rising from the teapot, and how special it all felt. Even that early in my life, I knew that sharing tea together is a love language.

When I moved to the UK thirteen years ago, I was surprised by the lack of choice when it came to tea. Here, tea was no longer made as loose leaf, and to my surprise, it was shared with milk. You could still sense that “putting the kettle on” meant something more than the simple act of making a hot beverage, but the magic of tea I experienced in my family home simply wasn’t there.

In 2021—the year we moved to Cornwall—after a local Zen meetup, I was first introduced to gongfu cha (功夫茶; making tea with skill). Engaging with tea in this way felt both exciting and strangely familiar. I was mesmerised by the teaware, and the taste of the tea transported me back to my grandmother’s tiny kitchen. Sharing tea together in that moment felt incredibly meaningful and marked the beginning of my deep respect and adoration for tea.

Since then, I have made many tea friends on my (somewhat short) tea journey, though unfortunately not many of them live nearby.

I hope that these community tea sessions will serve as a vessel for connection, education, and—perhaps most importantly—joy.

Raising a cup to all the tea shared so far—and all that’s still to come.
